Welcome to the Look Book where we talk about fashion and style in the Redenim world!
Today I want to tackle a style question I get all the time: what are the jeans that every woman should own?
I took a look at my personal collection and I asked some of the leading stylists and fashionistas I know and we determined that there are 4 pairs of jeans every woman should have in her closet.
Just 4 for endless outfit options any day of the year!
Want to know the styles that are must-have’s for your closet? Check out the video below for my picks or read more after the jump! Spoiler alert: we’re having commitment issues with boyfriend jeans when it comes to comfort….
Simplicity is key and the four styles you should own are what we call core styles. Core styles are like your denim squad — they’re always there for you, they’ve always got your back… side and they’re down for just about every occasion.
Quick note before we jump in: I recommend selecting jeans in a slightly stretchy denim for comfort throughout the day as well as comfort with slight fit fluctuations you experience over time.
You know what I’m talking about…
Fit and fabric are the most important things when you’re choosing your jeans so be sure to find pairs that first and foremost work for your body.
So without further ado, here are the four core styles every woman should have in her outfit arsenal!
Must have denim #1: A dark wash jean
Since the best style for you depends on factors like your height and body shape, I’m focusing more on the wash or color here than the cut. A dark wash jean has a clean, deep blue color with very subtle or no fading.
Dark wash jeans are great because you can dress them up, you can dress them down, they go with just about everything, and they hide stains if you’re like me and spill on yourself all the time.
Two styles that look fantastic in a dark wash are a classic skinny jean or a bootcut flare. These styles are universally flattering and in that dark wash, you could get away with wearing them year round. I personally wear a dark wash skinny more than any other jean in my closet.
Must have denim #2: A “workwear” jean
Second we have what’s called a “workwear” jean. Like a dark wash jean, this is more about the wash or color of the jean. Workwear refers to a medium wash denim. When you think of classic denim, this is probably what comes to mind.
I love a workwear jean because it’s just a little more casual than a dark wash, but it still pairs seamlessly with a multitude of outfits. Two styles that look great in a workwear wash are skinny jeans and straight cut jeans.
Workwear jeans also look amazing with some slight destruction details like a dropped hem or tears around the knee. They’re jeans that are meant to look like they’re your favorite pair so a little roughness around the edges not only looks great, it’s encouraged!
Must have denim #3: A casual, relaxed jean
Next, I highly recommend having a more casual style jean. And for being called “casual” I actually have a lot to say on the matter.
It used to be that boyfriend jeans were the only relaxed style out there, but now we have a couple to choose from for a variety of fits — mom jeans, girlfriend jeans, and vintage jeans to name a few.
That being said, there are a couple key differences between these relaxed styles that I’d like to touch on:
- Boyfriend jeans have a lower rise and a looser fit that tapers through the leg, perfect for rolling. They’re usually made from 100% cotton which has almost no stretch, but are cut loose enough that they don’t feel uncomfortable.
- Girlfriend jeans are usually made from stretch denim and feature a higher rise. They’re just a little bit slimmer than boyfriend jeans for a more feminine look, hence the name.
- Mom jeans are another casual option and refer to those vintage style jeans that we used to make fun of people in the 90s for wearing. They typically have a high rise and a straight or slightly tapered leg and are a little wider than girlfriend jeans.
There’s no graceful way to say this, but the most important thing to get right with a more casual jean is how it fits in the crotch and booty.
(If I’d known just how much time I would spend talking about butts in a given day I would have gotten into this business way earlier.)
Seriously though, the way a relaxed jean fits in the crotch and back side is the difference between it looking sloppy instead of chic. That fits depends highly on getting the right rise for your body and the jean fitting your waist properly. But once you find the perfect casual jean, it’s hard to wear anything else on the weekends.
A quick note on color: Relaxed jeans tend to look better in a light or medium wash for that more worn-in and loved look.
Must have denim #4: A daring pair
Finally, the last jean you should have is what I call a daring pair — and I don’t have a set style or wash here except to say that daring pairs are a little more fashion forward and out of the box. A daring pair should be jeans that you absolutely love otherwise you’ll never wear them and that defeats the purpose of being in your core squad.
A couple examples of daring pairs from the closets of fashionistas are cropped flares, colored denim like a white jean in the spring or a maroon jean in the fall, fun textures such as velvet or corduroy, or coated denim for a leather look… just to name a few.
I like to joke that your daring pair chooses you, but it really does because it’s a great way to express your unique style and point of view through your jeans! You should have at least one pair in your rotation that’s fun, different and fashion forward.
Alright, quick recap: The four pairs of jeans every woman should have in her closet are a dark wash jean, a workwear jean, a casual relaxed jean, and a daring pair of denim. This is the perfect core foundation for any wardrobe and should be able to carry you through endless combinations of outfits throughout the year.
